As the state representative of the Federal Association of Rescue Dogs e.V. (BRH) for Baden-Württemberg and a founding member of the BRH Rescue Dog Squadron Mittlerer Neckar e.V., Peter Göttert looks back on several decades of successful commitment to rescue dog work.

34 years of volunteer work

Peter Göttert was a passionate secondary school teacher until August 2015. Since 1981, his second passion has been rescue dog work. He gained his first experiences in this exceptionally time-consuming volunteer position in the BRH rescue dog squad Ulm. In 1989, on his initiative, the BRH Federal Association of Rescue Dogs was founded RBRH Rescue Dog Squadron Mittlerer Neckar e.V. founded. This made it possible to cover the densely populated area around Stuttgart with operational rescue dog teams. As a constant driving force, he led the Mittlerer Neckar rescue dog squadron to become one of the largest and most powerful rescue dog squadrons.

To this day, he and his wife Christa have been actively training their own rescue dogs over the years; last in the BRH Rescue Dog Squadron Northern Black Forest e.V. He always shared his passion for dogs and rescue dog work with his wife.

A strategist with commitment

Thanks to his strategic talent, he managed to combine not only his own squadron, but also the strengths and competencies of the rescue dog system in Baden-Württemberg. He always preferred to build bridges rather than divide. Collaboration across organizations and departments was always very important to him.

This ability not only brings him the recognition and trust of the authorities and disaster control organizations. The members of the BRH rescue dog teams in Baden-Württemberg also know this and elected him as BRH state representative for their federal state. He has held this position for over 20 years and has enjoyed numerous successes.

The Baden-Württemberg BRH rescue dog squadrons provide the specialist biological location service within the state disaster control system. As BRH state representative, Peter Göttert was responsible for covering all matters to the Ministry of the Interior.

As a member of the state advisory board for disaster control in Baden-Württemberg, he initiated the Federal Association of Rescue Dogs e.V. and the general rescue dog sector a number of important measures. These include, among other things, partnership agreements between the Turkish earthquake relief group (EDAK) and the essential exchange between domestic and foreign disaster control units.

When building the Baden-Württemberg State Working Group for Rescue Dogs (LAGRH) he was significantly involved. Today this regulates the cooperation of all BOS organizations in Baden-Württemberg that run rescue dogs.

Awards from Taiwan

The connection to Taiwan was particularly important to him. Since the BRH's earthquake operation in 1999, he has always maintained contact with the permanent representation in Munich and has thus made a significant contribution to the joint training and training of the BRH and disaster control/rescue dog units from Taiwan.

In 2019, Peter Göttert was replaced by the Secretary General of the Permanent Representative of Taipei, Mr. Hsu Tsong-ming, awarded the Taiwan Fire Service Medal. At the same time he was made an honorary citizen of Taichung. A combination that probably never existed for any other German.

Peter Göttert received the recognition because of his help after the severe earthquake that occurred in central Taiwan on September 21, 1999. At that time, a magnitude 7,3 earthquake occurred, followed by several severe aftershocks. A total of more than 2400 people were killed.

At that time, the BRH provided rescue dog teams that were sent to the disaster areas to search for survivors. At that time, Peter Göttert took over coordination with the Taipei representative in Munich for the BRH in Germany. A year later, he helped found a search and rescue dog center in Taiwan with the BRH Federal Association of Rescue Dogs. This was set up in the National Fire Authority, which belongs to the Ministry of the Interior of Taiwan.

In 2016, the BRH invited the employees of the fire department's rescue dog team to Germany for training, and a year later it sent experts to Taiwan to train local rescue dogs.

Furthermore, the BRH established its first in 2018 to promote exchange and support for Taiwan and neighboring countries Foreign office in the NGO center in Taichung. This coordinates training and operations in Asia.

In 2016, the state government of Baden-Württemberg honored him with the Staufer Medal for special services to the state and his achievements in the field of rescue dogs. This was launched in 1977 and is awarded to committed citizens of Baden-Württemberg who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary service to the state.

personal

Throughout his life, Peter Göttert supported people, projects and ideas in his job and in his voluntary positions. He was always authentic and his speeches were always exemplary. He was never above being selfless and proactive for others. He never lost courage and always found the strength to start over again after a step backwards in something. Everything he achieved was about helping people. Especially those who wanted to know the fate of their missing or buried relatives. That's why he made rescue dog work his life's purpose and achieved a lot in the process. Even when he was on sick leave, he continued to work for the BRH until the end.
