ASF wild boar carcasses are located by dogs using odor differentiation

The TCRH Training Center Rescue and Help in Mosbach trains teams to locate dead wild boars on behalf of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Rural Areas, Nutrition and Consumer Protection (MLR). This is intended to combat an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF). The TCRH deploys these search teams on behalf of the disease control authorities.

Competence through collaboration

The overall concept is supported by the hunting dog association e.v. (JGHV), the BRH Federal Association of Rescue Dogs e.V. (BRH) and the game research center of the Baden-Württemberg Agricultural Center (LAZBW).

These search dog teams consist of a dog, a handler, a companion and ideally a hunter. These search dog teams look for dead wild boars. For this purpose, the dogs at the TCRH are “sensitized” to the smell of dead pigs through so-called odor differentiation training. The training is free of charge for dog handlers and other emergency services.

The TCRH will also organize the operations. The local authorities responsible for animal diseases (district or city veterinary offices) have a contact person in the TCRH who can provide them with search dog teams, specialist advisors and operational structures in the event of an emergency.
